Kokeshi Cards

Jan 28

I swear I could almost hear my husband groaning from across the house while I was designing this new set of cards for the Silhouette, LOL. I think they’re up there with some of the coolest dolls *ever*, but Ty – along with a couple of my Japanese friends – are NOT fans. See, it goes like this…

My obsession with kokeshi begun in the spring of ’06 while staying in Tokyo.  I found my first at the Asakusa shrine, total touristy trash but cute all the same.

Then I started noticing them all over town and learned how to distinguish the work of true artisans VS mass production.  So I became hooked on collecting authentic, vintage kokeshi that are nowhere near as marketable cute as their modern decendents.

But while I’m a fan of their origins, I can also appreciate their evolution into marketable kawaii trinkets for mass consumption, which is why my cards are cute instead of kinda creepy =D  Enjoy!!

Its been a while since I checked out your site. I’m sooo happy to find out you started created designs for silhouette. I just bought a silhouette in Dec and love it! Your site rocks and your designs really inspire me.

I love the kokeshi dolls for the Silhouette!! …Along with your other fabulouse designs! I’m especially fond of the asian-inspired ones. Maybe because our household consists of Chinese, Japanese and Caucasian. =)
I had actually requested kokeshi dolls thru the Silhouette store when they first started taking suggestions. I was totally happy when I saw yours! I think they’re adorable.

  3. Hey Wendy! I usually sketch things out by hand, and then finalize the design in Illustrator. Thanks for writing! =D
